The Upper Peninsula and parts of Northern Michigan along lakes Michigan and Huron have the smallest populations of children by percentage in 2025. The county with the largest share of children was St. Joseph County in Southwest Michigan, where children made up 23.5% of the population. The smallest share was in Ontonagon County in the western Upper Peninsula, where children made up 11.9% of the population. One outlier is Gratiot County in Mid-Michigan, where the population of children ages 0 to 17 fell from 9,132 in 2020 to 6,066 in 2025, and residents aged 18 to 64 grew as a share of the population.
